4 Things to Avoid In Your Annual Review

4 Talking points to avoid in a review

It’s easy to go into an annual review with a feeling of fear about what your boss might say negatively toward your work product.

But if you have a great boss they will know this is not the time to air dirty laundry.

Instead a review is a time to simply highlight the things you’ve talked about all year together.

An annual review is not a time to talk about:

  • Your family

  • Your work product is separate.

  • Your gripe with accounting

  • Don’t put down other parts of the organization. It’s unproductive and puts you in a bad light.

  • Your need for a raise

  • That’s right I said it. Do not talk raises during a review. I strongly encourage this discussion at all other times in the year as it’s more meaningful.

  • Ways your boss can better lead the team

  • In the food service industry they say don’t hassle the people that touch your food. In the business world, don’t hassle the people that directly impact your salary when everyone’s salary is up for grabs. You could get robbed to pay someone else.
